India Sends Strong Message at UNSC, Calls Out Pakistan, Demands Reforms from Permanent Members

In a bold intervention at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), India firmly criticized Pakistan over terrorism and the Indus Waters Treaty, while also urging comprehensive reforms in the UNSC. India’s Permanent Representative, Parvataneni Harish, highlighted the Council’s repeated failures to maintain global peace, questioning its legitimacy, effectiveness, and relevance.

UNSC Reforms and Accountability

During the open debate on “Leadership for Peace”, Harish outlined six key points—India’s “sixes”—targeting both structural weaknesses and narrow national interests of the five permanent members (US, UK, France, Russia, China):

1. Narrow Interests of Permanent Members:
   Harish noted that when permanent members prioritize narrow national interests over global welfare, chances for peace diminish, affecting the Council’s credibility.
2. Need for Structural Reform:
   The 80-year-old structure of the UNSC hinders effective action. Harish emphasized the urgency of reform to reflect today’s realities, ensuring better representation for underrepresented regions.
3. Revive Multilateralism:
   India called for continuous efforts to strengthen multilateralism, with the next UN Secretary-General tasked not just with conflict resolution but also revitalizing global cooperation.
4. Representation of Global South:
   The new leadership should reflect the aspirations of the majority of humanity, focusing on development, climate justice, sustainable development goals, and equitable foreign aid.
5. Inclusive Leadership:
   Senior UN leadership appointments must be transparent and merit-based, with no position being an exclusive privilege of a few countries.
6. Transparent Secretary-General Selection:
   India supported initiatives for greater transparency in the Secretary-General election process, aligning with UNGA Resolution 79/327.

India’s Stance on Pakistan and Indus Waters Treaty

Harish issued a stern warning to Pakistan, reiterating that Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India. Pakistan’s references to these regions were described as attempts to push a divisive agenda that cannot be condoned by a temporary UNSC member.

On the Indus Waters Treaty, India stressed that after 65 years of cooperation, Pakistan has violated the spirit of the treaty through wars and sponsoring terrorism. India announced that the treaty will remain suspended until Pakistan permanently ends cross-border and all forms of terrorism.

Strong Rebuke to Pakistan’s Internal Practices

Harish also highlighted Pakistan’s domestic suppression of political dissent, constitutional overreach, and permanent immunity for military leadership as examples of governance failure. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to combat all forms of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism while emphasizing India’s faith in multilateralism and its willingness to work for global peace, security, and prosperity.

India’s intervention reflects a firm and strategic diplomatic stance, holding both Pakistan and UNSC permanent members accountable while reinforcing India’s vision for a reformed, inclusive, and effective United Nations.
