Amid rising inflation, feeding the working-class population in Delhi-NCR has become a growing concern. To address this, the Delhi government has launched the Atal Canteen Scheme, providing nutritious and delicious meals at just ₹5 per plate. On the occasion of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s 101st birth anniversary, the initiative was inaugurated, aiming to operate at 100 locations across the capital.
Residents of Ghaziabad and Noida also benefit from similar affordable meal programs run by local organizations and social initiatives.
Noida – “Dadi Ki Rasoi” Offers Hope
Located near the Ganga Shopping Complex in Sector 29, Noida, “Dadi Ki Rasoi” has been serving as a beacon of hope for the needy for several years. Daily wage laborers, rickshaw pullers, elderly citizens, and low-income families can enjoy a wholesome meal for just ₹5. The meals are simple, clean, and nutritious, ensuring that recipients can dine with dignity.
Greater Noida – “Janata Ki Thali” Initiative
In Greater Noida West, particularly around EcoVillage-2, the Nefoma organization is running the “Janata Ki Thali” program. Meals are available at ₹5, and those unable to pay receive their meals free of cost. This initiative has provided much-needed relief to migrant laborers, construction workers, and disadvantaged families.
Several NGOs and volunteers also operate low-cost canteens outside government hospitals in Noida and Greater Noida, providing meals at nominal rates to patients’ attendants and the needy. In some cases, the meal cost is as low as ₹5.
Ghaziabad – “Roti Wale Rakesh” Feeding Hundreds
In Ghaziabad, Rakesh Ahuja, popularly known as “Roti Wale Rakesh,” serves a full meal for ₹5 every Sunday under the “Apna Khana” initiative. Hundreds benefit from this effort each week. Additionally, in Chandra Nagar, Murari Babu organizes daily food distributions for the poor and needy, providing meals completely free of charge between 1 PM and 2 PM.
These initiatives are helping thousands of residents in the NCR access affordable, nutritious meals while instilling a sense of dignity and community.
