Bihar to Set Up First Water Sports Academy at Odhni Dam in Banka District

Banka (Bihar): In a major boost to sports infrastructure in Bihar, the state’s first Water Sports Academy will be established at Odhni Dam in Banka district. The announcement was made on Thursday by State Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh following a review meeting of the Bihar State Sports Authority. The proposed academy will offer international-level training and facilities, marking a historic step toward the development of water sports in the state.

A Landmark Initiative for Bihar Sports

Calling it a transformative initiative, Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh said the academy would provide comprehensive support to athletes, including modern training equipment, expert coaching, accommodation, nutritious food, and other essential facilities, enabling players to focus entirely on their training and performance.

She added that the project gained momentum after a recent meeting with the Chief Minister and Sports Minister of Madhya Pradesh, where both states agreed to strengthen cooperation for the holistic development of sports and athletes. Promoting water sports in Bihar emerged as a key outcome of this collaboration.

Expert Team Selects Odhni Dam

As part of the planning process, a specialist team from the Indian Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ICAK), Bhopal, was deputed to Bihar to assess potential locations. The team was led by Mr. Jack, a Canadian Olympian and internationally renowned water sports expert, along with chief coach Pradeep Naidu and international athlete Namita.

Over a three-day survey, the team evaluated several sites, including Durgawati Dam in Sasaram, Garhi Dam in Jamui, Odhni Dam in Banka, and Hardiya Dam in Nawada. After assessing technical feasibility, geographical conditions, and training potential, Odhni Dam was unanimously selected as the most suitable location for the academy.

“One of the Best Water Sports Sites in the World”

Praising the location, Mr. Jack described Odhni Dam as one of the finest water sports destinations globally. He said the expansive water body, natural surroundings, and scope for infrastructure development make it ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and rowing, as well as for hosting national and international competitions.

Mr. Jack also announced that he would return to Bihar in February to assist with the selection of talented athletes, implementation of scientific training methods, and planning of critical infrastructure such as jetties, modern equipment, and training facilities.

New Opportunities for Bihar’s Athletes

The establishment of the Water Sports Academy at Odhni Dam is expected to open new avenues for young athletes from Bihar, providing them access to world-class coaching and a platform to compete at the national and international level. The project also positions Banka district as an emerging hub for adventure and sports tourism in the state.
