Jabalpur, November 2, 2025
In a transformative initiative to restore the divine grandeur of the sacred Narmada riverfront, Jabalpur is set to witness the development of “Maa Narmada Ghats” modeled after the famed Sarayu Ghats of Ayodhya. The ambitious project, envisioned to combine spirituality, cleanliness, and sustainable infrastructure, has entered its implementation phase.
Public Works Minister Shri Rakesh Singh held a crucial meeting with saints and spiritual leaders of the city at the Circuit House today, presenting the detailed plan for this majestic riverfront development. BJP City President Shri Ratnesh Sonkar and MP Road Development Corporation Managing Director Shri Bharat Yadav were also present during the discussion.
First Phase: Unified Development of Six Ghats
In the initial phase, Khari Ghat, Daroga Ghat, Gauri Ghat, Uma Ghat, Siddh Ghat, and Jilhari Ghat will be interconnected and developed in harmony, ensuring a seamless spiritual and aesthetic experience for devotees. The plan aims to provide a clean, safe, and organized environment for bathing, worship, meditation, and sacred rituals.
Key Highlights of the Project
Special Facilities at Khari and Daroga Ghats
A dedicated immersion tank will be built at Khari Ghat to protect the main river stream from pollution. Both Khari and Daroga Ghats will feature proper stairways, changing rooms, priest sitting areas, and ritual spaces. Additionally, a small boat dock will be built at Khari Ghat and a larger one at Daroga Ghat. The walls of Daroga Ghat will showcase mural art and depictions of Maa Narmada’s divine story, adding a spiritual aura to the surroundings.
Divine Evening Aarti Setup
Five grand platforms will be constructed along the riverbank to host the evening “Narmada Aarti” — a spectacular and divine visual experience. Wide steps and viewing areas will allow devotees to participate comfortably. Special provisions have been made so that the Aarti can continue even during the monsoon season.
“Narmada Channel” – A Unique Feature at Gauri Ghat
A remarkable 800-meter-long, 15-meter-wide, and 1-meter-deep channel will be built from Gauri Ghat to allow devotees to access the holy waters safely without disturbing the river’s main flow. This channel will have two sections — one for floral offerings and lamp rituals (Deepdan), and another for ritual bathing. The entry road to Gauri Ghat will also be widened and improved for easy access.
Restoration of Temples and Ritual Spaces
Small and scattered temples along the ghats will be relocated and reorganized for a more serene and structured look. The natural Gomukh stream at Siddh Ghat will be preserved in its original form. Designated areas for priests, ritual shops, and immersion tanks will also be established near the new channel. A large cultural stage will be built near Jilhari Ghat for spiritual and cultural programs.
Parking and Pedestrian Infrastructure
To prevent congestion, five well-planned parking areas will be developed to accommodate nearly 900 two-wheelers and 700 four-wheelers. Gauri Ghat will be a vehicle-free zone, connected by a dedicated pedestrian walkway equipped with e-carts for elderly and differently-abled visitors. Shops and a welcoming gateway will be built along this route, with organized permanent shops replacing temporary ones.
Environmental Protection and Safety Measures
Environmental sustainability is central to the project. The entire ghat area will feature solar-powered LED lighting, underground drainage, and anti-skid stones for safety and cleanliness. Water jets will be installed for cleaning, and a central control room and watchtower system will enhance security.
Minister Shri Rakesh Singh described the initiative as a “sacred service to Maa Narmada,” emphasizing that with the blessings and cooperation of saints, this divine endeavor will mirror the magnificence of the Sarayu Ghats and elevate the city’s spiritual heritage to new heights.
